JESUS, OUR SAVIOR AND KING

Passage: Hebrews 2:5–9

Jesus, Our Savior and King

Hebrews 2:5-9

Secularism tells us that “God” is a celestial tyrant imposing his will on an unwilling world, squashing their individuality, and threatening them with dire consequences if they resist. This narrative serves the Enlightenment’s deist agenda of moving God out of the way to a remote heaven.  But the whole point of the Gospel, and our passage today, is that the coming of God’s kingdom on earth is precisely not the imposition of an alien and dehumanizing tyranny, but rather the confrontation of those tyrannies with the news that God, in Jesus, is radically different from them all, and that his plan aims at rescuing and restoring genuine humanness.  So we must hold on to the hope of God’s promised future.
