SURPRISED BY LOVE, OVERWHELMED BY GRACE

December 3, 2017 Preacher: Rick Carmickle Series: RUTH

Passage: Ruth 2:1–23

“Surprised by Love, Overwhelmed by Grace” Ruth 2

Ruth 2 continues the story of Naomi and Ruth. The famine in Bethlehem had ended, so Naomi returns home, and Ruth follows her. But they are both widows, so they returned destitute, discouraged, and in danger. More than ever, they needed God’s intervention. When life looked most desperate, Ruth meets Boaz, and everything begins to look up. From the depths of despair, we learn about love and grace.

1. Love Story: Ruth Meets Boaz (2:1-17)

Naomi and Ruth are destitute. So Ruth goes out to work—to glean in the fields—by picking up leftover grain from the ground. Ruth goes to the field of Boaz. Then Boaz shows up, sees the beautiful Ruth, and offers Ruth protection and provision. With the intervention of Boaz, Ruth sees a glimmer of hope.

2. Amazing Grace: Ruth and Naomi find hope (2:18-23)

Naomi is at home when Ruth returns at the end of a hard day. Ruth returns with far more grain than expected. Ruth tells Naomi she has been working in the fields of Boaz, a wealthy man who takes an interest in her. Naomi is overwhelmed by God’s grace in his provision through Boaz.

“Faithfulness” expresses gratitude.
