Passage: Exodus 1:1– 40:38

“Exodus: God’s Story of Promise and Deliverance” Exodus
Rick Carmickle January 7, 2018

The book of Exodus tells us the history of the Israelites, from their captivity in Egypt to their journey through the Red Sea and their time in the Sinai Desert. But it tells us more than Israel’s history. It tells us about God and his work to provide for his people. The story of Israel’s exodus from Egypt foreshadows our future promised in Christ. The story moves from slavery to emancipation to redemption and reconstruction.

1. Understanding Exodus in God’s Story of Redemption
The events of Exodus happened 3,500 years ago. So we might ask, How is Exodus relevant today? We see that the book of Exodus provides profoundly relevant answers, but only if we are asking the right questions.

2. The Great Themes of Exodus
          1. God controls history (Ex 1)

          2. God remembers his covenant promises (Ex 2:24)

          3. God is holy (Ex 3:5)

          4. God acts to bring salvation (Ex 3:8)

          5. God’s name is YHWH, the great “I am” (Ex 3:13-15)

          6. God speaks to his people (Ex 3:4-22)

          7. God acts in judgment (Ex 4:14)

          8. God abides with his people (Ex 29:45-46)
