The God Who Creates and Rules
Rick Carmickle
What does the Bible say about the nature and being of God?
Isaiah 40:18 To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?
How then can God be known?
Job 26:14 Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of
him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?”
God the Trinity
Understanding God in the Old Testament
Psalm 8:1 “Oh LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
“Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together” (Psalm 34:3).
“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:13).
“Our father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9).
Among the names of God revealed in the Pentateuch are the following:
Elohim - Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created.”
El - “Eli, Eli, . . . my God my God.” (Matthew 27:46).
El Shaddai “God Almighty”
El Olam - “the everlasting God”
Yahweh - YHWH, called the Tetragrammaton - “the LORD”
Yah
Yehosua, “Yahweh is salvation” (Joshua 1:1);
Yokebed, “Yahweh is glory” (Numbers 26:59); “Yahweh will provide” (Genesis 22:14);
“Yahweh my banner” (Exodus 17:15-16); “Yahweh our righteousness” (Jeremiah 23:6).
Exodus 3:14–15
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I AM has
sent me to you.’ ” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The LORD, the
God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to
you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

The God Who Acts in History
Exodus 34:10 And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do
marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among
whom you are shall see the work of the LORD, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.
C. S. Lewis: God is the “Transcendental Interferer.”
The God Worthy of Praise
1 Chronicles 29:14, 18 “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to
offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. 18 O LORD,
the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in
the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you.
Psalm 135:5–6 For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatever
the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.
Psalm 27:4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the
house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in
his temple.
The God Who Keeps His Word
Theology is speech about God; Revelation is speech of God.
Amos 3:7 “For the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the
prophets.
Ezekiel 12:25 For I am the LORD; I will speak the word that I will speak, and it will be
performed. It will no longer be delayed, but in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the
word and perform it, declares the Lord GOD.”
Jeremiah 3:12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, “ ‘Return, faithless
Israel, declares the LORD. I will not look on you in anger, for I am merciful, declares the LORD; I
will not be angry forever.

God the Father, who raised him from the dead—
1 Timothy 6:15–16 [God] who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of
lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever
seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion.

Romans 11:33–36 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How
unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the
mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that
he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be
glory forever. Amen.
The Alpha and Omega: God Reigns
Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and
who is to come, the Almighty.”
Revelation 21:6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning
and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.
